andrew b. martin

Andrew B. Martin grew up west of Calgary on a horse ranch near Cochrane. He worked various types of construction crews around Calgary in the home builders market which inspired further interest in design and construction. With a passion for art, he graduated from the University of Calgary with a Bachelors of Fine Art with a specialty in sculpture. With his interest in construction he continued on to complete a Masters of Architecture from the Faculty of Environmental Design at the University of Calgary. Andrew and John have designed projects together since 2007 and formed J A Architects in 2013, currently named J A Architecture.

On a personal note: 

Balance in life is fundamental on all fronts. Various personal interests are important outside of being an architect. One particular interest Andrew has is producing and spinning electronic music as a creative avenue alongside Jayson Hood for the last number of years. Andrew also likes to stay active. To this end, he enjoys working out, as well as various sports such as playing volleyball, sport rock climbing, hiking, archery, and horse-back riding in the rockies near his home with Alison.

Jayson Hood grew up west of Calgary in the town of Cochrane. After graduating high school, Jayson entered a pre-med science degree program at the University of Calgary on a Canada Scholarship. After three years in the program, Jayson realized that his childhood passion lay more in the drawings of houses and buildings he completed as a child, and decided to pursue a career in architecture. Bones, skin, nerves, and circulatory systems were traded for structure, envelope, and electrical and mechanical systems. Jayson completed a Masters of Architecture from the Faculty of Environmental Design at the University of Calgary, and worked for a Calgary firm for a couple of years before joining the Facilities Development department at the University of Calgary. He enjoyed several years working for the university through a major capital expansion prior to joining J A Architecture in 2014.

Outside of the office:

Although practicing architecture and successfully fulfilling the demands of the profession are a fundamental priority, Jayson also believes in maintaining a healthy life balance. Jayson is involved in various musical pursuits, including the production and spinning of electronic music with Andrew as mentioned above, and additionally includes playing guitar, a few songwriting endeavors, and supporting independent musicians in a variety of styles and formats. In the summer Jayson can occasionally be found on the ball diamond and out in the wilderness somewhere, and in the winter can most often be found at both indoor and outdoor rinks playing ice hockey. 

JOHN L. STEWART

John is now officially retired from the practice of architecture, and will continue to act as a senior adviser to the firm on an as-needed basis.

Home life:
